The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center opened in January 1997. It encompasses 22,000 square feet of exhibit space. Dioramas and hands-on exhibits compliment fine art, sculptures and exquisite taxidermy. A revolving art exhibit is on display, highlighting the works of various artists and photographers.

The Center highlights the four major habitat types found on the Refuge: Rocklands, Aquatic, Mixed-grass Prairie and Cross Timbers. A night exhibit reveals the sounds after dark, while a history rail overlooks the scenery of the mountains from picture windows. The auditorium shows programs throughout the day. A bookstore/gift shop is also located in the Center.

The refuge staff and volunteers host special programs and events throughout the year including wildlife and nature tours, wilderness hikes and historic sites tours. Join guides as the go "In Search of Eagles," "In Search of Waterfalls", or take a "Fins & Wings Walk." Other tours include "Stars Over the Wichitas", the "Wild Flower Walk", Bugling Elk Tour", and the "Fall Foliage Walk."
