Crossroads of Vermont

Crossroads of Vermont covers Rutland County in central-western Vermont, the country built around the city of Rutland and the Killington-Pico ski resort area. The terrain is dominated by the Green Mountains running north-south through the center, with deep glacial valleys on both sides — the Otter Creek to the west, the Black River drainage to the east. Lake Bomoseen (the largest lake entirely within Vermont) sits in the western half. Rutland County is the only county in the region. Rutland holds Rutland (the largest city, with a redeveloped historic downtown); Killington holds the Killington Resort (the largest ski area in the East); Pittsford holds the Vermont Marble Museum; Castleton holds Castleton University; Brandon holds Brandon. The Green Mountain National Forest’s central section, Lake Bomoseen State Park, and the Killington and Pico ski areas concentrate the major outdoor scenery. Most trips here split between Killington and downtown Rutland. Killington handles the ski-and-mountain-bike resort itinerary year-round — the longest ski season in the East runs late October to May; Rutland’s Paramount Theatre and the Vermont State Fair anchor cultural visits; the Vermont Marble Museum at Proctor carries the regional industrial history; Lake Bomoseen pulls summer cabin and fishing visitors.
