The Nebraska Journal-Leader was established in 1871 by the Hughes family, who ultimately established, and continue to own, the Norfolk Daily News. They also established the Wayne Herald in Wayne Nebraska. They obviously had a "good business eye" for picking stable towns.

The Nebraska Journal-Leader is the fourth oldest weekly Newspaper in Nebraska, and is the oldest business in North East Nebraska. There may be farm families with earlier linages to the soil.

Excellent sports photography has long been a strong suit of this stalwart newspaper. Recently, it has established its color bona fides as being on par with the best of all weekly and daily newspapers.

The current owner has operated this newspaper for 27 years.
