Emails from the Past
- Newfield Historical Society building, on the grounds of 19th Century Willowbrook Village 3 pm. "Emails from the Past," a look at the first three decades of the 20th Century through historic postcards sent to Anna Moore while she lived in the William Durgin house. Postcards were a very popular form of communication between friends and family members, and remained popular into the 1920s as an informal system of communication, which we could compare to the emails of today. People sent postcards on a frequent basis, leaving out words, ignoring rules of grammar, and using many abbreviations, just as we do in emails today. Presented by Willowbrook's 2008 intern, Angie Rankin, who created the program. A guided tour of Willowbrook's Durgin house follows the program. Carousel Rides and Blacksmithing Demonstration
- Carousel Rides and Blacksmithing demonstration by Betsy DeBrakeleer. Carousel rides on Willowbrook's 1894 Armitage Herschell "steam riding gallery" are being offered on Saturday, May 23, every 30 minutes beginning at 10:30 am and ending at 3:00 pm. Rides are free with admission to the Village, or tickets may be purchased for $3 each. An adult must ride with anyone under the age of 10. Feet must reach the stirrups to be able to ride on a carousel horse alone. Steam riding gallery, merry-go-round, hobbyhorses, flying Dutchman, steam circus, and flying Jenny are all different names for carousels. The 1880s through the early 1930s have been referred to as the "golden age" of the wooden carousel in the United States. More than 6,000 hand-carved wooden carousels were made and operated during these years--less than 300 remain today. About 25 percent of American-made carousels were made by one of four Herschell Companies of North Tonawanda, New York, and were shipped to purchasers via the Erie Canal. Children 10 or older, or those that are tall enough to reach the stirrups may ride without an adult. One ride is included with museum admission; additional rides are $3. Despite Ivory H. Fenderson's riding rules for his 1894 Armitage-Herschell Steam Riding Gallery, the town fathers of Kennebunk prohibited Fenderson from gaining a permit to operate the carousel in the early 20th Century. Fenderson's rules included "no boys allowed to stand on horses," and "no spitting tobacco or snuff on the machine," however the men of Kennebunk feared that riders would behave boisterously and inappropriately and did not want the carousel in their town. In rebellion, Fenderson ignored their wishes and had the portable carousel put together and operated it anyway, and was forced to pay fines levied by the town. Today, Fenderson's 1894 carousel is located at 19th Century Willowbrook Village, and provides rides for delighted visitors one Saturday each. Wood'n Fiber Day at Willowbrook
- A variety of activities and demonstration relating to wood and fiber will be presented today, including Fred Chellis, Windsor chairmaker; Bob & Chuck Perry, Streaked Mt. Woodcarvers; Bryant Taggart, woodturning; Larry Cable, electrolysis & antique padlocks; Jack Guzman, woodworking demo; and Paula Taggart, weaving on Durgin Barn loom. Activity Stations for Kids will be available from 11am-2pm and will includes activities such as weaving, spinning, papermaking, and more. Also on this day, Maine Antique Power Association and Southern Maine Tractor Club members will display (and "fire up") engines and tractors. Newfield Old Home Days
- The first Old Home day was held in 1914. Activities took place along the road near Harry Moulton's store (see picture above) and in the field nearby, including tug of war with close to 10 men on each side and a baseball game in afternoon. Homemade ice cream sold at the ball game was highlight for Bridges children. John Carlton hitched up a hay wagon and gave some of the West Newfield kids a ride down to Newfield Village for the events. Dinner was served to a large crowd in Towle's hall above the store near the bandstand. Evidently that hall was overcrowded because at the second Old Home day in 1916, tables were set up both upstairs and down in the schoolhouse. There, In a building with no kitchen and no running water, a fricasseed chicken dinner was served. Hot food was prepared at several nearby homes and carried in. Old Home Day was revived in the 1930s and held three years in a row from 1935-1937. Plans for each included a band concert, water sports at Rock Haven Lake, baseball games, an auto parade from West Newfield to Newfield Village, a baked bean supper, and a costume dance. Once again, Newfield Village will be the site of Old Home Day. On Saturday, August 22 only, 10am-3pm Free admission to Willowbrook! Newfield Historical Society, Limerick Newfield Lions and Willowbrook co-sponsor this 2nd annual event. Enjoy historic craft and trade demonstrations (Windsor chairmaking with Fred Chellis, blacksmithing with Tom Kiernan), games, vendors, music (11am and 2pm in the bandstand), carousel rides and more! - Carousel Rides, Blacksmithing Demonstration by Tim Green & Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA) Fall Meeting MOCA Meeting, 9am-3pm Maine Old Cemetery Association holds its fall meeting in Newfield. MOCA members and non-members are invited to attend. This meeting is being sponsored by the Historical Society of Newfield and 19th Century Willowbrook Village. The morning session will be held in the Historical Society building, with registration starting at 9am. Registration fee is $3.00 and will include coffee and a morning snack. A few displays will be set up. From 9:45-11:20, there will be a business meeting led by MOCA President Cheryl Patten with election of officers, and information about Newfield, Willowbrook and the activities scheduled for the afternoon. Lunch will be served at the Willowbrook Sandwich Shop at 11:30 am. It will include soup, 1/2 sandwich or wrap (select from ham or chicken salad), chips, pickle, beverage and a sundae for the price of $8.75. There are covered picnic table outside for those who prefer to bring their own lunch. The afternoon session, beginning about 12:30, will be held at Willowbrook in the area of the Country Store. Those attending will be divided into three rotating roups to experience a taste of Willowbrook: Video overview and chat with Willowbrook Director Amelia Chamberlain, abbreviated tour of the William Durgin House, and abbreviated tour of the nearby Carriage House. Also scheduled will be a "tour" of the old Newfield Village Cemetery which has been much improved over the past few years as a project of the Historical Society of Newfield. Originally a ride for adults, our carousel horses rock in place giving the allusion of riding on a real horse.
