Presbyterian Church

category : Historic Churches
Presbyterian Church The distinction of being the oldest church organization in Marion County belongs to the Presbyterian Church of Marion, which is also listed on the State Register of Historic Buildings.

The native stone used to build this structure was cut in 1872 by Stephen Jex, a local stonecutter. The money to pay for plastering the building was sent as a missionary project from a Sunday school class in Pennsylvania. The church was dedicated on July 26, 1874.

During the years 1930-31, the church underwent extensive remodeling and redecorating, although the original walls are still intact. While digging a basement under the church, many Indian artifacts were uncovered. Apparently the original structure had been built over an Indian burial ground. Artifacts from the site were sent to Kansas State University; the remains of the Indians were relocated just north of the original building.
