Pike County was formed in 1815 from Ross, Highland, Adams, Scioto and Jackson Counties. Excepting the rich bottom lands of the Scioto and its tributaries, its surface is generally hilly. The hills abound with the noted Waverly sandstone. Pike County is a section of small towns, the backbone of the United States, where everyone knows his neighbor and is endowed with homespun friendliness. Beaver, Piketon and Waverly are the three largest communities with Omega, Wakefield, Morgantown, Latham, Jasper, Idaho and others making up the remainder of the settlements.

Pike County also is the home of Lake White State Park and Pike Lake State Park.  A small portion of the county is also included in the Wayne National Forest.

Waverly is the home of the Jingle Bell Weekend, Beaver features the Oktoberfest, Piketon has the oldest festival in the county featuring the Dogwood Tree.  The Pike County Quilters make a Dogwood Quilt each year to raffle off.  Elm Grove features Elm Grove Days with old time music, dancing, home made cakes, pies and noodles and much more.
The County now has the Market Arts Center, featuring various works of art from artisans in the area.
