The PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory

The PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory The Observatory was constructed with the mission of significantly expanding educational, research, and community programming for Southeast Kansas school districts.The observatory features a research-grade telescope capable of many functions that are currently not available at any public or private facility accessible to school districts served by Greenbush. The telescope is housed on a two-story structure enclosed by a steel dome 24 feet in diameter.

Fun Fact: The telescope was originally owned and operated by the New Mexico State University Astronomy Department as part of the Blue Mesa Observatory, located in 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

Big Flag Veteran Memorial

Drop by an see one of the nation's largest American Flags (30' x 60' - 130' high). While you can see the flag from your vehicle, you really must stand under the Big Flag to appreciate its true size, 130 feet high above the Kansas prairie honoring all war veterans.

Ice was harvested from the McFarland Lake and stored in this lovely old stone barn built in 1896. It was built for James McFarland who was in the ice buisiness.

The oldest grave marker in the cemetery is of Mary Frances Crawford. The friends of Historic Girard has placed a new monument at this sight. Dr. Strong is buried here, along with many founding family names. It is worth a walk around to see how many you can see.
