Welcome to Grand Island! -- Or, as the French traders named it, "La Grande Ile," which in the late 1700s was discovered as being formed by a narrow channel that branched off the Platte River and created an island out of this portion of prairie.

Mormon Island State Recreation Area

Named for the winter stopover used by Mormon emigrants heading westward, Mormon Island State Recreation Area still offers comfort and conveniences to campers and other travelers on Interstate 80, as part of Nebraska's unique "Chain of Lakes."

National Register of Historic Places

The house is a distinct and significant example of a Nebraska dwelling designed in the Moderne style of the 1930s, a style never widely popular in the state. The original house, a one-story Victorian dwelling constructed in 1893

Andrew M. Hargis House

National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1898, the Andrew M. Hargis House is a fine example of the Queen Anne style and also incorporates Neo-Classical Revival detailing in its design. Hargis founded the Grand Island Business and Normal College in 1885
