Lied Conference Center / Arbor Day Farm

category : Landmarks
Lied Conference Center / Arbor Day Farm The Lied Conference Center / Arbor Day Farm offers a getaway destination with many working programs of the National Arbor Day Foundation. The entire building, including guest rooms, meeting space and public areas, is heated and cooled by a Fuelwood Energy Plant. Recycling is important throughout the building, and some of the materials, including carpet, are made from recycled products. The dining room overlooks a hazelnut orchard with Arbor Lodge in the distance. The trails around the building wind through the grounds, showcasing the many conservation projects at work.

With a strong sense of the country's history, visitors may look to the future. Arbor Day Farm offers an educational look at the world today and at measures that can be taken to preserve it for the future. Owned by the National Arbor Day Foundation, the property continues the mission of J. Sterling Morton in their everyday operations. Tours and programs educate about the environment and offer some alternatives to common problems.

Tours of the Orchard are geared to both children and adults. There are tours that focus on the production of the apple orchard and the varieties of apples that fill the Preservation Orchard. Learn how cider is made and see the antique apple sorter. A Tree Sleuths tour gives attendees a chance to walk the trails and identify trees. Many eco-tours promote the programs of the National Arbor Day Foundation.
